Let's be honest, most of us have had the classic cream cheese fruit dip loaded with marshmallow fluff or pudding mix. Delicious? Sure. But sometimes it's a little too sweet. That's where mascarpone comes in. It makes the dip smooth, elegant, and just sweet enough to let the fruit shine.

Why This Mascarpone Dip Beats Regular Fruit Dip

  • This easy dessert dip comes together in 5 minutes or less and is a great make-ahead recipe.
  • Only 4 real ingredients are needed to make this homemade dip and the flavor is out-of-this-world!
  • Sweetened with maple syrup, it's lighter and less sugary than traditional cream cheese dips.
  • Pairs with a variety of fruit or as a topping for pancakes, waffles or toast!

Ingredient Notes

  • Mascarpone cheese - The star of this dip. Mascarpone is a soft Italian cheese, similar to cream cheese but more rich and buttery. Its mild, slightly sweet flavor works beautifully in both sweet and savory recipes. If you've ever had tiramisu, you know this cheese.
  • Heavy cream -Adds richness and helps whip the dip into a fluffy texture. Use half and half if you prefer it a little lighter.
  • Maple syrup - The REAL stuff! It gives this maple mascarpone recipe its perfect level of natural sweetness.
  • Vanilla extract - Vanilla is one of those flavors that just adds some extra oomph (technical term) to a sweet dish. It complements the maple beautifully.

Maple Syrup 101 - Syrup comes in different color grades ranging from golden, amber, dark or very dark. The flavor gets more robust and intense the darker the color. Golden or amber-colored would be best for this recipe for the most balanced flavor, but it would be fun to experiment with various grades and varieties!

Step-by-Step Instructions

This recipe is SO easy to make. Here's how to put it together:

Step 1: Whip the mascarpone - Place mascarpone in a mixing bowl. Using a hand mixer, beat until light and fluffy. This shouldn't take too long, about a minute. Be careful not to over beat as the mascarpone could separate.

Quick Tip: The mascarpone will whip up best if it's at room temperature. Take the cheese out of the fridge at least 30 minutes up to an hour before starting. Forgot to take it out? Microwave it in 10 second bursts to just soften it.

Step 2: Add the remaining ingredients - Add heavy cream, maple syrup and vanilla. Beat until well combined.

That's it! Your mascarpone dip is ready to serve or store in the fridge until needed.

Storage Tips

At room temperature: Keep out for up to 2 hours.

In the refrigerator: Store your mascarpone dip in an airtight container for up to 5 days. If dip firms up in the fridge, add a splash of cream and re-whip it or let it sit at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving.

Freezing: Not recommended. Mascarpone tends to become gritty when thawed.

FAQ: Common Questions Answered

Where can I find mascarpone in the grocery store?

Mascarpone is sold in tubs and has become more of a staple in grocery stores. If your grocery store has a specialty cheese area near the deli, it's likely found there. If you can't find it there, I'd check by the ricotta or cream cheeses.

What is the difference between mascarpone and cream cheese?

Mascarpone is creamier, richer, and slightly sweeter. It gives this mascarpone dip a velvety texture you just can't get from cream cheese. You could use cream cheese in this recipe but the flavor will be tangier.

Can you freeze mascarpone cheese?

While you can freeze mascarpone cheese, the texture will be negatively impacted when thawed. It's likely the thawed cheese will have a grainy, separated texture.
