Ingredient Notes
You only need a few simple ingredients for this fresh limeade recipe:
- Lime juice - You'll need a full cup of lime juice for this recipe. You will mostly find Persian limes in the grocery store. Key limes are smaller and you'll need many more of them to get the amount of juice needed. Fresh limes provide a brighter flavor, but bottled lime juice can be used if fresh are out of season.
- Agave nectar - Also called agave syrup. It is a natural sweetener that is sweeter than white sugar. The best part is it can be added right to the limeade without boiling a simple syrup, as it will dissolve right in. Use a light agave for a clean, neutral sweetness. Amber works as well, but has a subtle caramel flavor that will come through a bit more in the limeade.
- Water - Use cold, filtered water for the cleanest flavor.

How to Make Homemade Limeade
Step 1: Juice the limes. Depending on their size and juiciness, you'll typically need somewhere between 8-10 limes for a full cup of juice.
Quick Tip: Roll the limes on the countertop before cutting to release more juices.
Cut limes in half and use a hand juicer or electric juicer to juice them. Most grocery store limes are seedless, but it's good to double check! Add the lime juice to a large pitcher.
Step 2: Add agave nectar and cold water. Start with ⅔ cup of agave and add up to ¾ cup until you reach your desired sweetness. Give everything a good stir. If there's time, chill the limeade in the fridge for half an hour before serving. Add some lime slices to the pitcher for a nice garnish.

Step 3: I prefer to put ice in the individual glasses versus the pitcher to avoid the whole mixture getting watered down.
Quick Tip: If your limeade tastes too sour, add a little more agave. Too sweet? Add more lime juice or a splash of water. Since limes can vary in tartness, give it a taste and adjust as needed.
Add-Ins and Variations
This is where things get fun. Use this homemade limeade recipe as a base to create some fun variations.
- Use the same general recipe but swap limes with lemons for a delicious agave lemonade, or use a combination of both for a homemade lemon limeade!
- Add 1 teaspoon of lime zest to the limeade for an extra citrus punch.
- Use plain sparkling water instead of still water. This works best if you are serving the limeade right away.
- Add fresh blackberries, raspberries or cherries to the limeade for fun flavor combinations. Let them infuse, or blend and strain them for a smoother drink. Using sparkling water and adding fruit create a fun "mocktail" that's delicious and refreshing!
- Infuse the limeade with fresh herbs like rosemary, basil, or mint. Let steep for a few hours, or muddle directly in the glass.
- Create a simple adult cocktail by adding vodka, rum or tequila to the limeade.

Storage Tips
Homemade limeade can be stored covered in the refrigerator for 4-5 days. Stir before serving as some natural separation can happen after it sits.
Turn leftover limeade into flavored ice cubes to add to water, iced tea, cocktails or smoothies for hint of citrus flavor!
