- Make-ahead friendly - Keeps in the fridge for weeks

Ingredient Notes
You only need a few simple ingredients to make this rich chocolate sauce:
- Unsalted butter
- Milk
- Marshmallows - The secret to that thick, creamy texture
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips - Semi-sweet chocolate keeps this from being overly sweet. If you prefer a deeper flavor, you can swap in dark chocolate chips.
- Vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt - Balances the sweetness

How to Make Hot Fudge Sundae Sauce
All the work for this homemade hot fudge sauce happens on the stove.
Melt butter in a medium saucepan with milk. Add the marshmallows and cook until they are melted. Remove from heat.

Add chocolate chips and whisk until chocolate melts completely. Then add vanilla extract.

Pour warm mixture over ice cream or transfer to a jar for later.
How to Make a Classic Hot Fudge Sundae
If you're making homemade hot fudge sauce, you might as well go all in for the sundae:
- Scoop ice cream into a bowl (measure with your heart here). Vanilla is traditional, but other flavors like chocolate, caramel, or mint chip are delicious too!
- Pour warm hot fudge sauce generously over the top
- Add your favorite toppings like whipped cream, chopped nuts (peanuts, almonds, walnuts or pecans), or maraschino cherries. Kids would love rainbow sprinkles, banana slices or crushed cookies on top!

Storage & Reheating
This recipe makes about 1½ cups of hot fudge sundae sauce. You could definitely double the recipe if you need more.
To store:
- Keep in an airtight container (mason jars work great!)
- Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 month
To reheat:
- Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each
- Heat only what you need to keep the texture smooth. Reheating the entire jar multiple times can affect both the texture and quality.
Best Ways to Use Hot Fudge Sundae Sauce
Besides topping vanilla ice cream, this homemade hot fudge sauce makes a great addition to a variety of desserts!

- Stir into milk for rich homemade chocolate milk

- Spoon over brownies or blondies
- Or grab a spoon straight from the jar
