This double-decker Classic Club Sandwich combines a traditional cold-cut deli sandwich made with turkey, ham & cheese with the classic B.L.T sandwich. Pair with chips and fresh fruit for the perfect lunch or light dinner!
I consider the Classic Club Sandwich to be the king of sandwiches. This sandwich stands tall and proud with it's three slices of bread essentially combining two sandwiches into one. It's a staple found on many restaurant menus, and I remember making many of them working at the café in my hometown as a teenager. This towering member of sandwich royalty makes a great option for lunch or dinner served alongside chips, pasta salad or fresh fruit.
What You'll Need For A Classic Club Sandwich
The Classic Club Sandwich, Club Sandwich for short, has about as complicated of a history as many real life royals. There are multiple stories on the exact origins of the sandwich, who created and what it was first made with. To this day, many versions still exist each with their own fillings and add-on ideas. I keep it fairly simple and straightforward with my version.
The ingredients I use on my Clubhouse Sandwich include:
- White bread - while wheat bread could also be used, there is something about good ol' white bread that is perfect for sandwiches like this
- Mayo - the glue that is going to hold this sandwich together
- Deli turkey - I usually buy oven-roasted
- Deli ham - honey ham or black forest ham are two of my favorites
- Cheddar cheese
- Swiss cheese - why have one kind of cheese when you can have two?
- Romaine lettuce
- Tomato - I love using plump, juicy garden tomatoes for B.L.T.'s and Club Sandwiches, making them one of my favorite summer meals
- Bacon - check out this recipe for my favorite way to "fry" bacon
Club Sandwich Layers
When making a Classic Club Sandwich, an easy way to think about it is as though you're making a traditional deli sandwich with two slices of bread. Then, a make a B.L.T. on top and top it with another slice of bread.
Before assembling, toast all the bread slices until nice and golden brown. Grab 3 slices of toasted bread to make the first sandwich.
- Spread a layer of mayo on top of one bread slice. Top with 2 slices of both ham & turkey along with a slice of cheddar & swiss cheese.
- Place second bread slice on top and spread another layer of mayo on top of this slice.
- Build your B.L.T. using a leaf of lettuce, 2 tomato slices and 2 slices of bacon.
- Spread one more layer of mayo on the last bread slice and place it on top to hold everything in place.
With a sandwich this tall, I like to use toothpicks to hold everything in place. You could cut the sandwich into 4 squares, but I prefer doing fun triangle shapes. To do this, place the toothpicks in a diamond shape and make 2 corner-to-corner cuts. I like the visual appeal of cutting the Clubhouse this way, but in short, cut the sandwich into 4 pieces for easier eating.
For obvious reasons, a Classic Club Sandwich is quite filling and doesn't require much to be served along with it. I serve mine with some dill pickles and potato chips on the side. Fresh fruit, coleslaw or pasta salad are some other great options to complete a lunch or quick dinner.
Clubhouse Sandwich Variations
I find sandwiches to be one of the most versatile foods that you can adapt to your liking. Each element of this sandwich has a flexible substitute that will still create a delicious sandwich.
- For the bread, sub wheat bread for a healthier option
- For the protein, sub in leftover carved turkey, ham or rotisserie chicken. You can also sub in turkey bacon for the regular and/or add some avocado slices!
- For the cheese, add some heat by subbing in pepper jack cheese for one or both slices.
Remember the world is your oyster, or in this case, sandwich!
