This double-decker clubhouse sandwich combines a traditional cold-cut deli sandwich with the classic B.L.T sandwich. Pair with chips and fresh fruit for the perfect lunch or light dinner!

I consider the clubhouse to be the king of sandwiches. This sandwich stands tall and proud with it's three slices of bread essentially combining two sandwiches into one.
It's a staple found on many restaurant menus, and I remember making many of them working at the café in my hometown as a teenager.

Ingredient Notes
Many different versions exist each with their own fillings and add-on ideas. I keep mine fairly simple and traditional.
- White bread - There is something about good ol' white bread that is perfect for sandwiches like this
- Mayo - The glue that is going to hold this sandwich together
- Deli turkey - I usually buy oven-roasted
- Deli ham - Honey or black forest ham are two of my favorites
- Cheddar cheese - Love the sharp flavor
- Swiss cheese - Why have one kind of cheese when you can have two?
- Romaine lettuce - Gives the sandwich a nice crunch
- Tomato - I love using plump, juicy garden heirloom or beefsteak tomatoes. Perfect for a summer meal!
- Bacon - Check out this recipe for the BEST way to cook bacon.
How to Make a Clubhouse Sandwich
Think about this recipe as though you're making a traditional deli sandwich and just when you think you're done, add another slice of bread and make a BLT on top. This sandwich doesn't mess around.
Before assembling, toast all the bread slices until nice and golden brown.
Sandwich Assembly
- Spread a layer of mayo on top of one bread slice. Top with 2 slices of both ham & turkey along with a slice of cheddar & swiss cheese.
- Place second bread slice on top and spread another layer of mayo on top of this slice.
- Build your B.L.T. using a leaf of lettuce, 2 tomato slices and 2 slices of bacon.
- Spread one more layer of mayo on the last bread slice and place it on top to hold everything in place.
Classic clubhouse cut - With a sandwich this tall, it's best to use toothpicks to hold everything in place. Place the toothpicks in a diamond shape and make 2 corner-to-corner cuts for the classic triangle pieces.
Serving Tips
This sandwich is quite filling and doesn't require much to be served along with it. I serve mine with some dill pickles and potato chips on the side. Fresh fruit, coleslaw or pasta salad are some other great options to complete a lunch or quick dinner.
Cooking the bacon is what takes the longest when making this sandwich. To save time, make bacon ahead of time and you'll be able to have a sandwich ready in no time!
Recipe Variations
I find sandwiches to be one of the most versatile foods that you can adapt to your liking. Each element of this sandwich has a flexible substitute that will still create a delicious sandwich.
- For the bread, sub wheat bread for a healthier option
- For the protein, sub in leftover carved turkey, ham or rotisserie chicken. You can also sub in turkey bacon for the regular and/or add some avocado slices! Never had avocado on a BLT? You gotta try this fun variation!
- For the cheese, add some heat by subbing in pepper jack cheese for one or both slices.
- Swap out romaine for iceberg or butter lettuce.
- Add Dijon or yellow mustard for a tangy flavor.
FAQ
There are a couple versions of the origin of the clubhouse sandwich. Both refer to the fact that this sandwich was served at private clubs in New York State back in the late 19th century.
Toasting the bread to a nice golden brown and serving the sandwich right after assembling will help keep everything fresh.
The perfect combination in this sandwich is having warm bread and bacon along with the chilled lunchmeat, cheese and veggies.
