Ingredient Notes

Here's what you'll need to make the best cream cheese caramel apple dip at home. Exact amounts are in the recipe card below.

  • Cream cheese - Use whatever brand you like best. Full-fat will taste the richest, but low-fat or Neufchâtel work too. Let it soften at room temp for an hour so it whips up nice and fluffy.
  • Sugars - Using both brown and white sugar in the recipe helps give it a caramel-like flavor with the right amount of sweetness.
  • Cinnamon & vanilla - Warmth and flavor boosters that make the dip taste like fall.
  • Salt - Just as in baking, salt helps balance the sweetness and enhances the flavors.

How to Make Cream Cheese Caramel Apple Dip

This dip is so quick and easy to make. The key is to whip it for a pretty long time for that fluffy texture. You can either use a handheld mixer or a stand mixer with whisk attachment. Here's how easy it is:

Combine softened cream cheese, both sugars, cinnamon, and salt. Beat on high for about 3 minutes until light and fluffy.

Add vanilla and beat again until just combined, about 30 seconds or so. That's it! Enjoy immediately, or refrigerate until party time. A great make-ahead recipe!

Troubleshooting Your Apple Dip (and Easy Fixes)

Here's how to fix common dip issues:

Dip is too lumpy - The cream cheese was probably too cold when starting the dip. You want the cream cheese to be soft and pliable so it easily whips up. You may need to beat for longer to smooth things out. In a pinch you can soften cream cheese by removing the wrapper and placing it on a microwave-safe plate and microwave in 10-15 second increments until softened.

Dip is grainy - Keep beating! Besides achieving that fluffy texture, mixing the dip for longer allows the sugars to dissolve into the cream cheese. If it still feels grainy, keep mixing!

Dip is too stiff - If you make this dip ahead of time and refrigerate, it may be more stiff. Solve this by letting it sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes or add a small amount of heavy cream and re-whip.

Best Apples for Dipping (and Other Dippers)

Apples + cream cheese caramel dip = match made in heaven and a great choice for your fall party. The best choice of apple depends on your flavor preference:

There are a couple different approaches to this:

  • Tart & crisp: Granny Smith
  • Sweet-tart balance: Honeycrisp, Pink Lady
  • Sweeter crunch: Fuji, Gala, Jazz

Keeping the apples from browning is an important step. There are a couple different ways to keep them looking nice:

  • Lemon water: 1 tablespoon lemon juice to 1 cup water (my go-to method).
  • Salt water: ½ teaspoon table salt to 1 cup water.
  • Honey water: 1 tablespoon honey to 1 cup water.

Soak apple slices for about 5 minutes, rinse, and pat dry. Below is a side-by-side comparison using the 3 methods. I left the apples out for an hour after to see the results. All of these worked fairly well keeping the apples from browning!

Beyond Apples: More Dipper Ideas

While apples are the classic, this cream cheese caramel apple dip is also great with:

  • Crunchy: Graham crackers, pretzels, shortbread, vanilla wafers, gingersnaps
  • Fruity: Pears, strawberries, banana slices

These dipper ideas would go great with this Mascarpone Fruit Dip, too!

Serving Ideas

  • Simple platter: Place dip in a small bowl surrounded with apple slices.
  • Show-stopper board: Build a dessert charcuterie board with dip at the center, filled in with fruits, cookies, and pretzels. If dessert boards are your thing, this frosting board is another great option for a party!
  • Layered style: Spread dip in a pie plate, drizzle with caramel sauce, sprinkle with toffee bits, chopped nuts, or chopped candy bars.

Portion Calculator: Recipe yields about 1 ½ cups (8-10 servings). Plan on 2-3 tablespoon of dip + 1 medium apple per person. You can easily double it for a crowd! This is just an estimate and will depend on if this is part of a party spread or just a snack.

Storage & Food Safety Tips

Storage - Dip will keep for 3-4 days in an airtight container. Freezing is not recommended as the texture will break.

Food Safety - Don't keep dip out at room temperature for longer than 2 hours, even less if served outside.

Quick Tip: Keep your cream cheese caramel apple dip chilled longer by placing the serving bowl over a tray of ice.
