Dark Chocolate Hot Chocolate

There's hot chocolate, then there's dark chocolate hot chocolate. Rich, velvety and full of chocolate flavor, this isn't the packet mix you grew up with. The best part? You only need a few simple ingredients to whip it up at home in minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 tbsp. dark cocoa powder
  • 3 tbsp. brown sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 oz. dark chocolate chopped
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Method

  1. Add milk to a saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
    2 cups whole milk
  2. Add cocoa powder, sugar and salt. Whisk for 2-3 minutes until smooth.
2 tbsp. dark cocoa powder, 3 tbsp. brown sugar, pinch of salt
  3. Stir in chopped chocolate and whisk until fully melted.
    2 oz. dark chocolate
  4. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream, mini marshmallows or chocolate shavings.
    1 tsp. vanilla extract

Notes

  • For extra indulgent hot chocolate, replace ½ cup of milk with heavy cream.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate is typically around 60% cacao, while bittersweet is 70%. The higher the percentage, the more bitter and less sweet the flavor.
