Molasses Cookies

These cookies are a little sweet, a little spicy and the perfect amount of chewy. Roll in powdered sugar before baking to give them a "snow-covered" look!

  • ¾ cup shortening
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 4 Tbsp. molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. cloves ground
  • ¾ tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. ginger ground
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon ground
  • ½ cup powdered sugar


  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream shortening & sugar and beat until fluffy. Add molasses and mix well, then egg.
  • In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt & spices. Add to wet ingredients and mix well.
  • Roll into heaping tablespoon sized balls and roll in powdered sugar. Place on ungreased cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake 10-12 minutes. Allow to cool on tray for 2 minutes before moving cookies to a wire rack. Sprinkle with some extra powdered sugar, if desired. Store in an airtight container or cookie tin.
